| 02-10-07 Head Archeologist from the Moscow Institute of Archeology begins work at St. Catherine the Great Martyr Church
On Tuesday, October 2, 2007, Leonid A. Beliaev, PhD, Head of the Department of Moscow Archeology of the Institute of Archeology and Professor of Medieval History, Art and Archeology and also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Rossiiskaia Arkheologiia visited St. Catherine the Great Martyr Church to make an inspection of the recent exploration work which began yesterday near the foundation of the bell tower.
Dr. Beliaev during the course of his inspection found tombstones dating to the 16th century and pottery and clay pots from the 16th-18th centuries in the excavation area. In addition, parish Dean, Archimandrite Zacchaeus, church warden Sergei Alikov and parish bookkeeper shared with Dr. Beliaev archival material obtained over the last two years from the Russian State Archives related to St. Catherine the Great Martyr Church which will aid in the archeological work around the temple and throughout the parish territory.
