| 23-02-04 His Holiness, Patriach Aleksy leads a wreath-laying ceremony on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on the day commemorating the Defense of the Fatherland
On the day commemorating the Defense of the Fatherland, His Holiness, Patriarch Aleksy II on behalf of the entire Russian Orthodox Church, led a wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the walls of the Kremlin. Also participating in this ceremony were various hiearchs of the Russian Orthodox Church, deans of local parishes and other Moscow clergy, as well as Orthodox veterans who served in defense of their Fatherland. Archimandrite Zacchaeus, the Representative of the Orthodox Church in America to the Moscow Patriarchate joined in this ceremony as well.
Following the symbolic laying of the wreath the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church and the clergy offered prayers in memory of those who layed down their lives in service of their country. They clergy ended this short prayer service with the singing of "Memory Eternal".
Following the service, His Holiness congratulated the clergy and all gathered with the feast, and encouraged all to offer their prayerful service of spiritually defending the Fatherland from all evil.
